EL PUERTO DE SANTA MARIA, SPAIN

El Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain, population 70,000, is famed for its matadors, seafood, and bodegas. El Puerto reached its greatest splendor during the colonizing of the Americas. Columbus spent the years 1483 to 1486 here, when the local lord, the Duke of Medinaceli, showed interest in his plans for a voyage of discovery, and here he met Juan de la Cosa, owner of the ship the Santa Maria. The splendid structures built by merchants and adventurers caused it to be called The City of 100 Palaces.

See the map at the bottom of the page to get an idea where we are located: The Andalucian region in the province of Cadiz. Just think of the region as being like a state and a province as being a county in the U. S. and you'll have the right idea. We are on the southwestern Atlantic coast on the Bay of Cadiz. We're an hour northwest of Gibraltar. Beautiful weather most of the year with lots of sunshine. December and January do get quite chilly though(40s).
